The next Professorial Inaugural Lecture will discuss the construction industry and the growing importance of Building Information Modelling (BIM).

‘It will not slice a pineapple – how to change the construction industry?’ is the intriguing title of Professor Arto Kiviniemi’s lecture, which takes place on 22 May 2012.

The digital architectural design specialist, from the School of the Built Environment, will look at the integrated use of BIM in construction, which he refers to as “potentially the biggest change the traditionally conservative architectural, engineering and construction industry has ever experienced.”

His lecture will be based on his long international experience in countries where this change started earlier.

Professor Kiviniemi’s career as an architect took off in 1972. Between then and 1996, he won 12 first prizes in architectural competitions as the main assistant of Arto Sipinen, one of the leading architects in Finland.

Since 1996, he has developed integrated BIM both in Finland and across the world.

Professor Kiveniemi joined the University in May 2010 and is currently Head of the Design Directorate.

The lecture will take place in The Old Fire Station Council Chamber, from 12noon until 1pm, followed by a buffet lunch.
