Invisible Weight: A series of paintings by Sean Mahan -
This series of paintings by Sean Mahan of Neptune Beach, FL is part of a larger series of figurative paintings on wood. The paintings are social-realist graphite renderings on oak and birch, colored with thin washes of acrylic. They depict a sense of wonder at the innate warmth of the human character and its conflict with structures of power and control. Rather than trying to illustrate an idea, the paintings are intended to pose questions which allow for the uniqueness of interpretation. The paintings primarily intend to acknowledge the creative expression of the simple inherent sweetness within humans. In this series, the symbol of the “shadow person” is repeatedly used to pose questions about those “in the shadow of power,” as defined by sociologist C.L.R. James, and to pose questions about our insulated view of the impact popular culture has on others.
