Ales Hlousek and Sarah Kaufman

Project Basho is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, (In)visible Spaces, featuring work by Onward Compe 2009 winners Ales Hlousek and Sarah Kaufman.

Dealing within the opposite realms of public and private spaces, Hlousek and Kaufman’s work seen together presents an interesting visual journey through our inner and outer worlds. Ales Hlousek’s work addresses issues ranging from the nuances of urban planning failures to the nature of perception itself. Focusing in on the distinctly average American city of Toledo, Ohio, Hlousek presents viewers with a series of deadpan views of “spaces so ordinary they beg the question: what exists here - is it anything at all?” This notion of utilitarian architecture surfaces in much of Hlousek’s work, but it is in his Toledo project that “the symbiotic relationship between architecture and society” comes to the fore at its most bleak.
