ZaMZaM Arts, which aims to foster cross-cultural artistic collaborations, hosts a United Nations-like concert June 1 at Busboys and Poets called "Intersections." Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, Sri Lankan pianist Dinuk Wijeratne, Iraqi American trumpeter and santur player Amir ElSaffar and Indian American tabla player Mayookh Bhaumik on the surface may not seem to have much in common, but each brings skills honed abroad as well as in the United States, and a contemporary vision for traditional international sounds. Intersections.
An evening of original compositions and improvisations showcasing the talents of Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Sri Lankan pianist Dinuk Wijeratne.
The music of this truly original duo explores both Arabic and South Asian influences, with a smattering of Jazz and contemporary classical idioms on the side.
Wijeratne plays the piano as you've never heard it before, evoking harp, sitar and tablas with flair and imagination.
Azmeh's haunting folk-like lines combine to make this a wonderfully unique sonic experience.
Intersections will feature special guest artists Iraqi American Amir ElSaffar on trumpet and santoor, Mayookh Bhaumik on tabla.
ElSaffar, an expert in Iraqi Maqam and an accomplished Jazz musician, and Bhaumik, a virtuoso on tabla, will be performing for the very first time with Azmeh and Wijeratne.
