The emotionally charged yet often hilarious story of one young person’s journey through the abuse of alcohol, drugs, food and sex; a journey into and ultimately out of self-loathing. Rubin uses stand-up comedy, poetry, song, improvisation and monologue to reveal the seven conflicting archetypes in her psyche: The Inner Child (Baby Katie), The Hostage (Big Katie), The Romantic (Sylvia), The Judge (The Perfect Monster), The Trickster (Hank), The Artist (Poet), and The Wise Woman.

Insides OUT! has toured to over 75 venues nationwide. Additionally, Rubin has been commissioned to write three original works for the stage and is currently in development of a new solo work to be workshopped at Capital Stage in Sacramento this fall. Katie earned her MFA in Acting from UC Davis and her BA in Theater and Dance at Amherst College. She has also studied at the Wynn Handman Studios at Carnegie Hall.

How this piece was born: “When I got sober in 2001, I found that I had seemingly endless energy, I decided to channel it into telling my story. I knew it had the potential to help other women struggling with similar issues.

“I began with the poems. I went to open mic night at The Wallflower Gallery in Florida and improvised in character voices, telling true stories from my life. I hoped to discover a narrative through line, and ultimately, my improvised rantings revealed just that.

“At a certain point, I got stuck and couldn't find my way to the next step. Then my therapist suggested a book: ‘Witness to the Fire, Creativity and the Veil of Addiction.’ Each chapter explores a different Jungian archetype. Seven of thesein particular leapt off the page, and I intuitively knew those ‘inner characters’ would be the show’s narrating voices.”

Insides Out! runs one night only, Monday May 10th 7pm, doors at 6:30. Stage Werx is located 533 Sutter Street between Powell and Mason. The theatre is close to the Powell Bart station, and is wheelchair accessible.
