Keynote Speaker: Robert J. Palmisano, Director, Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO); Former President, CEO and Director, IntraLase Corp. (acquired by AMO in January 2007)

Developing a strategic corporate vision and then executing on that vision is critical for the success of any medical device enterprise. This is true whether the vision is directed toward developing a new device to ride the wave of a highly popular surgical procedure, such as Lasik, or developing a new device to offer better treatment for a condition affecting a large segment of the population, such as GERD. But vision quests vary. Robert J. Palmisamo will take us through his experience as President and C.E.O. in driving IntraLase Corp. toward its strategic vision of creating a new surgical gold standard for laser eye surgery positioned to be indispensable in the marketplace for Lasik and other eye surgical procedures. Success at achieving that vision led to a successful $808 million acquisition by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc., the market leader in Lasik surgery systems.

Bernard Haffey will then present the NDO Surgical, Inc. case from the President and C.E.O.'s perspective, illustrating how perseverance in achieving the strategic vision is necessary to the success of a medical device start-up as well. Following successful product development, clinical development and market clearance, NDO Surgical faces reimbursement as the final and significant hurdle to market adoption. Success in overcoming this hurdle requires high levels of clinical evidence as well as significant external effort focused on key societies and payers. This panel will discuss achieving the corporate vision, including critical path planning and execution necessary to achieve fair reimbursement for novel procedures and devices.
