canada/fait au canada, an evening of both world and Toronto premieres
from the compelling and original Susie Burpee (Toronto) and the inventive Jolene Bailie (Winnipeg).Now in its sixth season, d:mic/fac is a bi-annual festival of contemporary Canadian
dance pairing emerging and established artists. It is a noted platform
for nurturing new choreographic talent through a mentoring experience,
as well as inspiring cross-disciplinary collaboration by hosting a
venue for visual artists, this time with photographer Omer Ykseker. The second instalment, evanescence: made in
canada/fait au canada, features works by Holly Small (Toronto) and Freya Olafson (Winnipeg), and runs April 9-11, 2009.Susie Burpee brings the world premieres of her solo, A Mass Becomes You, a new half-length solo work created and performed by Susie alongside Canadian songwriter Christine Fellows. With Ms. Fellows at the piano, A Mass Becomes You will be the first time they will perform together on stage. Based on short stories of circus sideshow performers, this work is an intimate song and dance performance about strange beauty. Jolene Bailie will perform her own creation Switchback, a work that she has been refining re-visiting and performing since 2006. What began as a deep guttural response to Jolenes own feelings of confinement within her own life has grown to have a life of its own and has become her signature work. Using the life cycle and primal instincts such as hunting and guarding as the starting point, Switchback is an animalistic and highly physical work, where muscularity, repetition and tension mimic the demands and cyclical reality environment plays on a species.
