IMAPS/ASME Luncheon - An Overview of Medical Devices Packaging: When Engineering Assists Life November 1, 2006

While the specific application environment is the human body, and the typical customer is the medical doctor, medical devices are typically designed, developed and manufactured by engineers. A multi-disciplinary team of engineers who are also well versed in medical terminology is generally required for successful medical device development and deployment. Another unique aspect of the medical device industry is that it is very strictly regulated – by the Food and Drug Administration, and compliance with their requirements is also necessary. The Bay Area has approximately 85,000 jobs in the biotechnology area, with approximately 35,000 of these jobs being in medical devices. The companies that manufacture medical devices are both large companies and a variety of smaller companies including start-ups. In this presentation Professor Selvaduray will review some of the developments that have been on-going in the medical devices area, with an emphasis on the manufacturing aspects, and where appropriate, will be highlighting the relationships and connections between the medical device and microelectronics assembly industries.

Guna Selvaduray joined the Materials Engineering Department at SJSU in Fall 1984. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science & Engineering from Stanford University, and his B. Eng. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology. His current research interests include materials issues for biomedical implants including the effect of surface treatments on biocompatibility, corrosion and other surface phenomena, microelectronic encapsulation and interconnection issues, issues related to Pb-free solders for microelectronics, and environmental issues related to engineering materials. In 1998 he initiated SJSU’s first class in Biomaterials and Biomedical Devices.
