Images from Chinatown: Four decades of Photographs by Maurice H. Edelstein

San Francisco- Maurice H. Edelstein's photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown on view at the Chinese Culture Center January 13-February 2, 2012.

Images from Chinatown, a retrospective solo exhibition will examine the lives of the elderly, children and family situations framed by unusual Chinatown backdrops through photography. A frequently ignored subject overshadowed by Chinatown as a tourist spot itself, Images from Chinatown, gives the spotlight to the people who live and work within Chinatown, one of the densest neighborhoods in the country. Additionally, historical photos such as the protest of the I-hotel, depicts the activist history and daily struggles of Chinatown and the community.

About the Artist: Maurice H. Edelstein, a native of San Francisco and long-time friend within the Chinese community, Edelstein has been taking photographs for over four decades. His work has been long documented, and has been exhibited at the Chinese Culture Center in 1998 and 2004.

This exhibition is the launch of the new Visiting Exhibition Series at the Chinese Culture Center. The Series features guest curators, local and international artists and artwork, and community organizations who take over the gallery space, in order to give a more inclusive view of contemporary, modern, and traditional works in Chinese culture and art. The Visiting Exhibition Series complements the CCCArts Visual Arts series, Present Tense Biennial, XianRui, and other exhibitions curated by CCC Artistic Director, Abby Chen.
