"A superior sense of style" (The Strad on Sophie Shao)

Three talented performers join PCMS on Sunday, February 22 at the American Philosophical Society for a Schubert-themed program: Ignat Solzhenitsyn (piano), Soovin Kim (violin), and Sophie Shao (cello). Ignat Solzhenitsyn, recognized as one of today's most gifted artists, is currently enjoying an active career as both pianist and conductor and garnering critical acclaim for his lyrical and poignant interpretations. In recent seasons his extensive touring schedule in the United States and Europe has consisted of concerto performances with major orchestras, including Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, and collaborations with such distinguished conductors as André Previn, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Charles Dutoit. Among other engagements, Solzhenitsyn has collaborated with the Emerson, Borodin, and Brentano Quartets, and in four-hand recital with Mitsuko Uchida.

Soovin Kim has been warmly received around the world since capturing first prize at the Niccolò Paganini International Violin Competition in 1996. Kim has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and Indianapolis Symphony, and in addition to his activities as a soloist, Kim devotes part of each year to touring with the Johannes Quartet and the string trio Divertimento. His latest recording features Paganini's 24 Caprices - the first of several CDs he will be making with Azica Records. He frequently participates at the Marlboro Music Festival and in performances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, performing on the 1709 'ex-Kempner' Stradivarius.

Cellist and Curtis graduate Sophie Shao, who began playing cello at age six, has received her own critical acclaim for her "eloquent, powerful" (The New York Times) interpretations of repertoire ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Crumb and Wilson. In great demand as a chamber musician, she has collaborated with members of the Beaux Arts Trio, the Guarneri, Juilliard, Orion, Cleveland, Mendelssohn String Quartets, and has performed with such distinguished artists as Gary Graffman, David Shifrin, Jaime Laredo, Andre Previn, Eugene Istomin, Cho-Liang Lin, Andre-Michel Schub, Paquito D'Rivera, Claude Frank, Andre Watts, Martha Argerich, and Christoph Eschenbach. Her latest recording, Diablerie, has just been released on Albany Records, featuring the compositions of Richard Wilson.
