From one of Japan’s most celebrated directors,
Yasujiro Ozu
A universal story about power & respect

Created by one of Japan's most celebrated directors, Yasujiro Ozu, the classic 1932 silent film I Was Born, But... is screening at Riverside Theatres on Sunday 8 July and is accompanied by Riley Lee performing live on the shakuhachi flute.

A universal story about power and respect, two boys move to a suburb of Tokyo and miss school to avoid bullies. With the help of an older boy, they take on the bullies and win. Their respect for their father and for themselves is challenged when they think their father is being subservient to his boss.

Riley Lee began playing the shakuhachi in 1971. He is the recipient of two of the oldest and most venerated lineages of traditional shakuhachi, which can be traced back to the Zen Buddhist komusô, or "priests of nothingness" of the Edo period in Japan. In 1980, he became the first non-Japanese to attain the rank of daishihan or Grand Master. Lee's music is meditation. It has been used worldwide in yoga and taichi classes, and by massage, acupuncture, and other bodywork therapists.

Tokyo-born Yasujiro Ozu was a movie buff from childhood, often playing hooky from school in order to see Hollywood movies in his local theatre. In 1923 he landed a job as a camera assistant at Shochiku Studios in Tokyo. Three years later he was made an assistant director. In 1927 he directed his first film Blade of Penitence and went on to make thirty five silent films. His trilogy of youth comedies with serious overtones placed him in the front ranks of Japanese directors.
