HSDPA/HSUPA are advanced data services that are now being deployed on UMTS networks worldwide. They offer reduced latency and much higher data rates on downlink and uplink. They are expected to help usher in a mass market for mobile IP multimedia services. This course offers a review of the UMTS/WCDMA architecture followed by detailed coverage of the performance and design features contained in the 3GPP specs for UMTS release 5 (HSDPA), release 6 (HSUPA), and release 7 (HSPA+). You will learn about the functionality and coding of the new transport and physical channels as well as the adaptive modulation and coding techniques behind the new high speed capabilities of UMTS. We will review the work-in progress on Release 8, Long Term Evolution (or LTE) and conclude with a look at the ITU proposal for 4G, the next generation of wireless technologies. Upon course completion, you will have a good understanding of what lies beyond UMTS Release 99, which will help you plan future upgrades to your network.
