This course covers HSC English Extension 1 Module B Texts and Ways of Thinking Elective 1: After the Bomb. Students will explore the notion of a particular historical period and the ways in which it shapes literature and other texts in relation to the period from the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan up to the collapse of the Soviet Union. You will study the full range of set texts with the aid of a substantial course booklet and you will discuss possibilities for texts of your own choosing. A particular feature is that the course includes focus on both the creative writing and critical essay components of the exam with a further course booklet to support learning of the creative writing component worth fifty percent of the exam paper. The issues dealt with include the way the texts of the period are shaped by Cold War anxiety and intense questioning about political systems, humanity and human beliefs and values. The lecturer has extensive experience as a marker and judge for English Extension 1 and will include focus on how to achieve success in the examination.
