It was critic David Thomson who described Hawks as cinemas greatest optimist and it seems a reasonable description. For most of his working life, Hawks was dismissed as an entertainer, a director who could turn his hand to any genre thriller, comedy, western, musical with equal skill. But when Hawks was discovered by the French in the late 1950s another side of this ultimate professional was revealed: the autuer whose love of stoic, professional men and gutsy, wise-cracking women is on display in every film he made, no matter the genre. So the man who made Scarface (the original of course), Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Red River, Rio Bravo, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and a great many more is now up there in the cinema pantheon. Well explore his career, view three of his films in full, and screen clips from many more. Details of this event may be subject to change.
