On Tuesday, January 3, at 2:00 p.m., local hospitality and
nightlife industry workers, consumers, and community
businesses from across the city will assemble at
Franklin Square Park (14th and K Sts. NW) and join
together to oppose a proposed D.C. Council bill which
would forcibly impose a mandatory smoking ban at D.C.
alcohol-licensed nightclubs, bars and restaurant bars.

The D.C. Council tentatively approved a mandatory
smoking ban on December 6. Mayor Anthony Williams
opposes this legislation and supports an exemption
for nightclubs, bars, and restaurant bars.

The March will be lead by a contingent of local
restaurant chefs, including some of the most prominent
culinary professionals in Washington, and will include the
participation of service professionals representing
all categories of restaurant, bar, and nightclub
employees, as well as other supporters, and patrons.

The Rally on the steps of the Wilson Building will be
followed by the opportunity for participants to stop by
D.C. Councilmember offices and leave signed statement
cards indicating opposition to the proposed legislation.

The D.C. Council will hold its final vote on the proposed
smoking ban, including any additional amendments, the
following day on Wednesday, January 4. D.C. Mayor
Anthony Williams is opposed to the current legislation
and has publicly called on D.C. Councilmembers to
exempt nightclubs, bars, and restaurant bars from any
mandatory smoking ban.

We invite you to participate in this important industry
event and help generate the participation of as many
people as possible! We hope that you will make every
effort to adjust your schedule of personal and
professional commitments in order to attend.

Please also help spread the word and alert industry
colleagues -- and invite other friends and associates --
to join in supporting the survival of D.C. nightlife by
participating in this public event!

This event is being organized by the Restaurant
Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW), the
D.C. Licensed Beverage Association (DCLBA), and the
Committee for a Living DC (CLDC).
