The Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, which began in 1989, is the first festival of its kind in Asia, and has since developed into the most significant Lesbian and Gay festival in Asia, as well as a major event in the LBGT community’s cultural calendar in Hong Kong.

In 1989 the Hong Kong ARts Centre introduced the Gay and Lesbian Films Seasons into their monthly film program, unofficially launching the annual event that we come to know now as the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

It is hard to imagine that 18 years have gone by since the first program decicated to gay and lesbian films was launched in the territory. However, difficulties in the past have enforced unavoidable hiatuses of the festival along the way. Historical records indicate that we might actually be only 15...but, like any restless teenageer, we just want to grow up fast, be treated like an adult and taken seriusly. We're 18, okay?

Just as the LBGT community and the festival have grown and matured over the years, so have the films that chronicle our struggles. We hope that you will enjoy the journey of growth we have prepared for you in this year's programme.

A lot of people have, throughout the years, dedicated wholeheartedly to this festival, braving hardship so the festival could survive against the odds, and to bring the best of LBGT cinema to our audiences every year.
