The fourth annual Homefest concert, hosted by the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness (ECOHH), will feature a line up of some of Edmonton’s best-known folk performers, as well as out-of-town artists, that includes:

Karla Anderson Finest Kind
Brian Champagne John Wort Hannam
Back Porch Swing Rob Heath
House Cats Terry Morrison & John Gorham
Kat Danser Lara Yule Singh
Dead Man’s Dog

The City of Edmonton estimates nearly 50 000 more housing spaces will be needed over the next three years to accommodate the housing needs of low income and homeless people. The count of homeless people in Edmonton in October, 2004, identified 2192 people who were without a home on a typical day. There will be a new count of homeless people in October this year.

Proceeds from the concert this year are going to Boyle Street Community Services for their new outreach program for the homeless in the river valley, and the Canadian Mental Health Association, Edmonton Region, for their Moving Expense Program. Last year’s concert raised money for Terra Association to help single moms move and acquire household supplies so that they don’t become homeless and for recreational opportunities for children in Mennonite Centre for Newcomers’ supported housing for refugees.

“Every dollar we receive supplements existing resources directed towards the affordable housing issue,” says Jim Gurnett of ECOHH. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure low-income, affordable housing is available to all. The City of Edmonton’s Cornerstones program is an important positive development over the past year but other orders of government must be told to do more by people. We hope those attending Homefest will deliver this message to the politicians.”
