DENVER (September, 2009) – Lovers of19th and early 20th century architecture will have a unique opportunity to visit selected homes in the Historic Whittier Neighborhood during their annual House Tour on October 18th. The Historic Whittier House Tour features ten homes that are open to the public from 1 - 6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Whittier Neighborhood Association.

From grand homes to cottages, the Historic Whittier House Tour includes examples of carefully restored interiors as well as those now reflecting the conveniences and tastes of modern living. The tour includes a peek into the history of early Denver by inviting attendees into one of the city's first neighborhoods. First developed in the 1870s, Whittier was home to middle class immigrants who built carefully crafted homes with attention to quality and ornamentation seldom seen in modern construction. The neighborhood, now a blend of cultures and a thriving community of diverse people, continues to contain many of these old homes.

Less than two miles from downtown Denver and boasting a clear view of the city's skyline, Whittier is bounded by Martin Luther King Boulevard, Downing Street, East 23rd Avenue and York Street. The neighborhood takes its name from the original 1880s Whittier Elementary School, located in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, and named for the19th-century abolitionist poet, John Greenleaf Whittier.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 on the day of the tour and are available at all area King Soopers, KJ’s Coffee Bar at1710 E. 25th Avenue and online at www.WhittierNeighborhood.org. Tickets are also available the day of the tour at each tour location. A map will be available online prior to the tour.
