Heritage Walks with Surekha - Eco & Heritage trails: Doon Focus. Delhi-based conductor of Heritage Walks, Surekha Narain has organized a tour of the Doon valley. Special permissions are being obtained to walk the campus of Doon School, Forest Research Institute and even Indian Millitary Academy where foreigners are not allowed. Besides this we will visit the site of an NGO that is involved in educating and empowering the women, children and youth in a village called Purkal. There will be walks around Rajpur, Tibetan monasteries, Old Dehradun for havelis and other walks in the forests surrounding Doon. To get a real flavor of historic Dehradun we will learn about the Kalinga war of 1814, the dramatic tale of how India was mapped and Everest was named and even enjoy Garhwali and Tibetan food. For nature lovers there will be tree & bird walks with local experts. As far as possible we will be avoiding the tourist and picnic spots. So lets get wet in the rain in Ruskin Bonds Doon (Green) Valley. Four-day tour, we leave Delhi by the night train on Wed. night, from Nizamuddin and we return back to Delhi on Sunday evening by the Dehradun Shatabdi. Board & lodging in a simple home stay-- all on sharing basis with simple home cooked vegetarian meals.
