CENTRAL Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Westside’s newest event facility, for music, nightlife, art, culture and causes welcomes Hellride on Saturday, November 27, 2010. Tickets are $10.00. Doors open at 7:55 PM, show starts at 11:55 PM. More information at www.centralsapc.com or call (310) 451-5040. CENTRAL is located at 1348 14th Street in Santa Monica, CA.

Hellride is a side project live band featuring former Minutemen, fIREHOSE, and Porno For Pyros bassist Mike Watt. Also performing will be former Porno For Pyros guitarist Peter DiStefano, and former Jane's Addiction and Porno For Pyros drummer Stephen Perkins. The band, which is exclusively a live entity, performs occasionally in Los Angeles-area clubs. Their entire set list is devoted to playing and reinterpreting the music of The Stooges by way of jazz legend John Coltrane. The band grew out of Watt and Perkins' more frequent collaborations in the jazz-punk improv. group Banyan as well as Watt's brief stint as bassist with Porno for Pyros in 1996.
On separate occasions, Watt did a Hellride performance on Halloween in 2003 with The Secondmen drummer Jerry Trebotic substituting for Perkins, who was on a Jane's Addiction reunion tour at the time. He also performed in a "Hellride East" line-up in New York City in 2000 with Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Murph on guitar and drums.
Watt, almost ironically, has since gone on to replace deceased bassist Dave Alexander in the reformed Stooges with original members Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton and Scott Asheton.

WHAT IS A SOCIAL AID & PLEASURE CLUB??
The main purpose of a Social Aid & Pleasure Club is to unify communities and neighbors. Social Aid & Pleasure clubs originated in New Orleans and were a source of pride among African Americans, always involving music. Members stemmed from 1800’s organizations called “benevolent societies.” These societies helped dues-paying members of the Pleasure Clubs with financial hardships, anything from health-care to funerals. Benevolent societies fostered a sense of unity in the community, hosting events and charity. Today, Pleasure Clubs still bring people together to enjoy and rejoice in good music and are custom-made venues for non-profit organization events.
