Helene Mukhtar is a mixed media New York artist. Her work is based on paper collages and oil paint on canvas. Born in France, she now lives in Brooklyn and travels extensively. Her photographs are the inspiration for her work. Printed on paper and glued on to the canvas, they become the visual jumping point from where she puzzles out what each piece will be. Sometimes maps, newspapers, pieces of cardboard are used with her photographs. For instance, in the series “Harmony”, Mukhtar uses music partitions to explore the relationship between the line and the circle, between music score and the architecture of Palais d’Orsay in Paris.
“It is a dialogue “, says Mukhtar about her work, “between the collages, the paint, the canvas and myself. I constantly destroy and reconstruct. It is a slow process. Then eventually, everything starts falling into place”. This intuitive approach and openness of her creative process allows Mukhtar to end up with a harmony of sometimes disparate collage elements and muscular often geometrical slices of color.
