Helene Mukhtar will exhibit “East-West graffiti” at the Square Foot Show organized by Art Gotham Gallery, 192 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10013. The gallery is located in Soho, between Spring and Prince Street. The exhibition will run from June 7th to July 12th. The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday 1pm to 6pm.
Helene Mukhtar is a mixed media New York artist. Her work is based on paper collages and oil paint on canvas. Born in France, she now lives in Brooklyn and travels extensively. Her photographs are the inspiration for her work. Printed on paper and glued on to the canvas, they become the visual jumping point from where she puzzles out what each piece will be. Sometimes maps, newspapers, pieces of cardboard are used with her photographs. In the series “EAST/WEST”, Mukhtar investigates the visual similarities between western graffiti and images from Pakistan.
“It is a dialogue “, says Mukhtar about her work, “between the collages, the paint, the canvas and myself. I constantly destroy and reconstruct. It is a slow process. Eventually, everything starts falling into place”. This intuitive approach and openness of her creative process allows Mukhtar to end up with a harmony of sometimes disparate collage elements and muscular often geometrical slices of color.
