The story comes from medieval German folklore and deals with themes of poverty, starvation, abandonment, and violence. In the original tale, a poor woodsman and his wife make the difficult decision to leave their children in the woods rather than watch them starve to death at home. Though the story has lightened in tone through the years, there are still heavy themes to be discussed and explored.
