These photographs highlight the lives of poor women workers in India and the various forms of labour and income-generating activities in which they are involved. Their hands are the visual symbols of power, sometimes of sheer survival, and also their dreams and hopes. The pictures expose their individual and collective struggles as ‘working homemakers’. They also draw our attention to the informal economic sector which is powered by so many workers whose contribution often goes unnoticed and who remain excluded from the mainstream with its greater equitability in access to resources.
