Toronto Film Society wraps up it's summer in the dark with strangers with 2 films-one unkown and one underappreciated.
HOLLYWOOD STORY 1951 directed by William Castle with Richard Conte, Julie Adams--Before William Castle made his name directing some of the cheesist, but still loved horror thrillers he cut his teeth in film noir. A successful stage producer arrives in LA and rents an old silent movie studio where a famous director (can we say William Desmond Taylor)was murdered decades ago-the crime never solved (and still isn't). He decides to shoot a movie about it but the killer resurfaces, determined to stop all who get too close to solving it. Fantastic cast features many old silent stars including FRANCES X. BUSHMAN, BETTY BLYTH and WILIAM FARNUM. Extemely rare 16mm print.
STAGE FRIGHT 1950 directed by Alfred Hitchcock with Marlene Dietrich, Jane Wyman, Alastair Sim--The Master's under-appreciated black comedy/thriller has more curves than Dietrich. An apspiring actress (Wyman)shelters a friend who is accused of murdering his flamboyant lover's husband. He convinces her that his lover is the real murderer and she sets out to prove it. Delicously dangerous.
