PRESS RELEASE:

The Ryerson Student Lecture Series Presents – The Guerrilla Girls

John Bassett Theatre at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre

Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 7pm

Toronto, Ontario: The Ryerson Student Lecture Series is proud to present a performance by the world renowned group of women artists, The Guerrilla Girls. In the tradition of anonymous do-gooders, The Guerrilla Girls are feminist masked avengers who use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose sexism, racism and corruption in politics, art, film and pop culture. They will talk about their work concerning their philosophy of activism, and their campaign against the lack of ethics in the art world.

The Guerrilla Girls have appeared at over 90 universities and museums, in publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker and Artforum; on NPR, the BBC and CBC; and in a number of art and feminist texts. They are authors of stickers, billboards, many posters and other projects (including a large-scale installation for the 2005 Venice Biennale,) and several books including The Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art and the Guerrilla Girls' Art Museum Activity Book.

The John Bassett Theatre seats over 1,000 people; we are excited to be able to accommodate such a large audience in the heart of downtown Toronto. The event is in celebration of International Women’s History Month and also coincides with the Toronto Art Expo.

This will be a historic event for Ryerson University as the internationally celebrated Guerrilla Girls have never performed at a Toronto university before. The performance will be free to the public, as made possible by generous support from Ryerson University, Ben Sherman and HSBC.
