"No superior on the world's stages" (The New York Times)

The Guarneri Quartet and original cellist David Soyer join PCMS on Friday, May 15 at the Perelman Theater for an evening of Beethoven and Schubert. Renowned for their resilient, elegant skill and annual Metropolitan Museum of Art six-concert series, among other accomplishments, the Guarneri Quartet has been the corner stone of the PCMS series since our opening night in 1986. Founded at the Marlboro Music Festival in 1964, the Quartet has announced its retirement at the completion of the 2008-09 season. The Guarneri has been featured on many television and radio specials, documentaries and educational presentations both in the United States and abroad. A full-length film entitled High Fidelity: The Guarneri String Quartet was released nationally to great critical and public acclaim in the fall of 1989. The Quartet is also the subject of several books, including Quartet by Helen Drees Ruttencutter; The Art of Quartet Playing: the Guarneri in Conversation with David Blum; and Arnold Steinhardt's Indivisible by Four: A String Quartet in Pursuit of Harmony.

As a founding member of the Guarneri Quartet, this concert provides a unique chance to hear David Soyer play once again, as he is widely revered as a legendary cellist and mentor for an entire generation of young cellists at Curtis Institute. In addition to his years as part of the Guarneri Quartet, Soyer has performed with major orchestras around the world, and remains an active member in the chamber music world today as a guest artist with such ensembles as the Tokyo, Orion, Colorado, and Borromeo String Quartets. Raim, an important performer in her own right, joins PCMS "as a musician of intelligence and judgment" (New York Times), and has participated in many leading musical festivals over the years, including Marlboro, Ravinia, Mostly Mozart, and Santa Fe.
