Grounds for Sculpture combines outdoor sculpture in garden settings on a 35-acre landscape carved from the former New Jersey State fairgrounds outside Trenton, N.J. Both massive contemporary sculpture and whimsical realistic scenes blend into quiet pockets of conifers, open green lawns, woodlands and water features. Visitors can enjoy courtyards, sculpture walls, and gardens with thousands of trees, roses, shrubs and flowers.
The not-for-profit institution also includes two indoor museum buildings with changing exhibitions, a café and museum shop.
Founder J. Seward Johnson Jr. created Grounds for Sculpture to make sculpture more accessible. Many of his own life-size sculptures, often a humorous twist on French Impressionistic paintings, are part of the landscape first opened to the public in 1992.
