In 1960, four North Carolina A&T students staged a sit-in at the lunch counter of the old F.W. Woolworth's on Elm street after the store refused to serve them. This historical incident inspired similar movements across the South and later dissolved segregation. The four students are considered pioneers in the nation's civil rights movement.
