We will be discussing data center efficiency from the facilities perspective. As much as 50% of a data center cost can be attributed to cooling needs. Often times this cost can be notably reduced through re-engineering, optimization, and routine maintenance. Considering the temperate climate we live in (i.e. "free cooling") and various incentive programs from PG&E there are numerous reasons to take a renewed look at how energy efficient cooling systems can be implemented for any sized data center. The reduction of a data centers energy needs has a three-fold benefit, one lower energy costs, two increase potential cooling capacity in which to add more equipment, and three promote corporate responsibility.

This discussion will delve into components such as air-side and water-side economizers and its prevalence in today's data centers, the value in modeling your air flow and return patterns as well as what the future may look like if nothing is done.
