Great Paintings of the Metropolitan:
Wheat Field with Cypresses
Kent Lydecker, Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Associate Director for Education.

Vincent van Gogh’s much beloved Wheat Field with Cypresses is among the Metropolitan Museum’s signal acquisitions during the directorship of Philippe de Montebello, secured through the generosity of The Annenberg Foundation. Though it was painted in 1889, soon after Van Gogh arrived at the asylum in Saint-Remy, the picture seethes with creative energy, reflecting both the vitality of the artist’s ever-moving hand and the vibrancy of the world at a particular place and time. One of a series of talks focusing on the Museum’s extraordinary paintings collection, this lecture will investigate Wheat Field with Cypresses in the context of Van Gogh’s artistic development, particularly in relation to other works by him in the Metropolitan
