LTC has experimented with Reader's Theatre before, but this show marks the beginning of regularly scheduled events giving patrons more ways to enjoy performances on our stage. As Reader's Theatre, this show presents some challenges in making the story clear and engaging without the help of costumes, sets and props. So we will be trying something different. Half the cast will be the readers, sitting still with books in hand. The others will mime the action of the play to help the audience better visualize the story. When presenting a speaking character the actors will wear masks. When not directly involved the masks will be removed. We hope this leads to an exciting and engaging evening for our audiences.
At a sod hut in the Kansas wilderness of the 1870's. four frontier women wrest a living from the stubborn soil. As they cope with wolf attacks, a constant fear of Indians, and the dismal isolation of the prairie, they talk of "going to see the elephant" - crossing the next hill to see what lies on the other side. It is this sense of striving to achieve all that life can offer that gives the play its power and beauty - and makes it clear that the wilderness was not tamed by men alone. 303-772-5200
