In strategic regions across the world – from Africa to the Middle East to South Asia – the threat of global warming has scientific experts predicting growing water shortages, serious damage to agriculturally dependent economies and food security, increased flooding, major population displacement, and greater burdens on fragile states leading to state failure. At home in the Pacific Northwest, scientists predict a number of impacts, including decreasing snow pack, increasing wildfires, and shrinking populations of fish species, to name just a few. Fortunately, Oregonians have already shown leadership on the issue with state and local government initiatives as well as private sector actions and emerging technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recognized the urgency and timeliness of these issues when she announced the creation of a new Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Congressman Blumenauer has been asked to serve on this committee.

At the Forum, Congressman Blumenauer will be joined by Congresswoman Hilda Solis of California, a colleague on the Global Warming Committee and fellow champion of environmental protection in Congress.
