"Girl Trouble/Boy Trouble Vol. 2”
Vintage Teen Guidance Films
Screen at Oddball Films

On Friday, November 26, Curator Pete Gowdy and Oddball Films present an evening of the strange, and bizarre world of vintage guidance films. Shown in grade school, junior high and high school auditoriums, these films were meant to educate, guide, and usually strike fear in impressionable youths. Some were shown to the all students, but many were girl or boy only- now is your chance to see what you missed!! Showtime is 8:30PM and admission is $10.00. Seating is limited so RSVP is preferred to: [email protected] or 415-558-8117.

Highlights Include:

Teenagers On Trial (B+W, 1955)
Made in the wake of Rebel Without a Cause. Shown are images of petty crimes, stealing goods, breaking windows, underage drinking at bars, all leading to a more serious incident when a police officer is hit by a teen-age driver, leading to arrest and juvenile detention.

While the problems focus mainly on the teens themselves, the narrator goes on to mention the fact that busy parents holding down two jobs were also part of the trouble--or, simply bad parenting.

Shy Guy (B+W, 1947)
Poor Phil (Dick York) can’t seem to fit in at school. So he haunts his basement tinkering with electronics like some ancestor of Crispin Glover. His overdressed dad (just home from his mob meeting) comes to his rescue and Dick learns a valuable lesson in social conformity.

It’s Wonderful Being a Girl (Color, 1966)
Presented by Personal Products Company (a division of Johnson & Johnson), the makers of Modess- it’s not a “curse”, it’s Wonderful Being A Girl!

The Dangerous Years (B+W, 1966)
Hosted by David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), this documentary made by the Kemper Insurance Co. analyzes the problem of increasing juvenile crime and what is being done about it. Very atmospheric with nods to noir and cinema verité style- includes photographs of juvenile criminals and interviews with them concerning what they think is their role in the community.

Happy Family (B&W, c. 1950)
Narrated by “dad”, this guy has the perfect wife, perfect daughter and perfect son…

About Dating (Color, 1947)
Classic teen dating guide in stunning Technicolor- so very relevant today!

PLUS- more twisted oldies and clips- math class is cancelled, all Oddball Junior High students please report to the auditorium!!
