Based on a screenplay by WOLFGANG KOHLHAASE and GUENTHER RUECKER
DEFA, 1969/61, 69 min., b/w, digital proj.
The film minutely chronicles the supposedly Polish assault on the German broadcasting station Gleiwitz close to the Polish border.
The attack, fabricated by the Nazis, was used as an excuse to invade Poland and thus marked the beginning of WW2.
The almost documentary direction style gives the film an absorbing immediacy and authenticity.
The Gleiwitz Case also raises questions about the possibilities and techniques of provocation and the manipulation of facts and opinions.
