The Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) dishes up some summertime musical fun when it presents “Hairspray Sing-Along,” featuring the delightfully campy musical film about “pleasantly plump” teenager Tracy Turnblat (Nikki Blonsky) who rallies against 1960s-era racial segregation with the support of her reclusive mother Edna Turnblat (John Travolta in drag), Sunday, July 31, 2011, 8:30 pm, at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Blonsky, who made her professional acting debut in the film and earned broad critical acclaim for her upbeat role and powerhouse singing chops, makes a special live guest appearance at the Sing-Along, which is sponsored by HBO and benefits GMCLA’s Alive Music Project, an education outreach program fostering tolerance and acceptance through music. Guests are encouraged to bring picnics, lawn chairs and blankets. VIP gates open at 6 pm, general admission is 7 pm, and the screening is at 8:30 pm.
