Hillwood is thrilled to celebrate the newfound right of hundreds of couples who can now legally marry in Washington, DC, with a special wedding-themed Gay Day. The gracious tradition of Hillwood founder and Washington socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post of opening her home to visitors for grand entertaining is the backdrop for Gay Day. From 10 to 12, Hillwood partners with Rainbow Families to present the GLBT Family Garden Party. Breakfast treats will be served on the Lunar Lawn, where Post hosted her legendary garden parties, while a hands-on art activity, books and games, and fancy dress-ups will have families feeling just like guests of Mrs. Post.
In the afternoon, all the elements of an elegant wedding, featuring a classic wedding dress worn by Mrs. Post, a digital “photo album” of Post-family weddings at Hillwood, fabulous floral displays, and a wedding reception-style “Punch on the Portico,” featuring a reproduction of a May pole/gazebo from Mrs. Post and Herb May’s wedding reception, come together to honor the special day that is now possible for everyone. As always, in a nod to Mrs. Post’s fabulous and welcoming style, Gay Day will feature DC Lambda Squares, the Rock Creek Singers of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, a vintage car display from the Straight Eights, a gallery talk about Mrs. Post’s wedding dress with Hillwood curator Howard Kurtz, and exclusive peaks into mansion rooms not usually open to the public.
