Gavilan College Fine Arts Gallery presents Roy Hinojosa: These Hands / Estas October 17, 2008

Who: Roy Hinojosa, born and raised in Gilroy, California, attended local
schools and worked with his parents in the surrounding area planting and
picking various crops. The times he was able to take a break, Roy found
time to sketch and draw objects as a way to find inner peace.

In 2004, Roy began a raging battle against two great giants. “The first
giant was cancer, and the second was Parkinson’s disease. These giants
took all of his inner strength and the battle was fought with the help of
his wife, the doctors, his family and his friends.
They all encouraged him
to take down the first giant and conquer it,” said Arturo Rosette, Gavilan College Art Gallery Curator.

As Roy points out, “My god sustained me to stand and to win the battle
against cancer.” The second giant still exists, causing tremors and shaking of his hands and body. At times, he is unable to hold a pencil or a brush. Roy has overcome and "learned to live strong" through the encouragement of his family and friends.

In 2007, Roy enrolled at Gavilan College in an art class where he learned
the techniques of mural painting. As Roy puts it, “My art teacher and
director, R2Row, has taught me much from his techniques and teachings. To
bring life to a wall is hard to explain when you lay color after color and
turn something ugly into something beautiful.”

What: You are invited to join Roy Hinojosa on October 17th from 5:30 to
7:00 pm for a free reception at the Gavilan College Gallery.

When: The exhibit will be on display from September 16 - November 7, 2008
