Garbage Warrior - Film. Director: Oliver Hodge. This programme is organised by the NCPA's Mohile Parikh Center for the Contemporary. This film tells the epic story of radical Earthship eco-architect Michael Reynolds, and his fight to build off-the-grid, self-sufficient communities. It won the Audience Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival 2007 and was nominated for three British Independent Film Awards. In the hands of renegade architect Michael Reynolds, beer cans, car tyres and water bottles can be used to produce thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years, the New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of `Earthship Biotecture' where design and function converge in eco-harmony, but create conflict since big business is hindered by such ideologies. Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site, but while politicians procrastinate, tsunamis and hurricanes strike. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary.
