Writer-director Joann Sfar’s GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE is the winner of the 2011 Césars (France’s equivalents of the Academy Award) for Best First Film and Best Actor. Eric Elmosnino also won the Best Actor Award from the Tribeca Film Festival Award for his brilliant portrayal of Serge Gainsbourg, the legendary French singer-songwriter-provocateur who reached iconic stature and inspired legions of musicians the world over. Renowned comic book artist Joann Sfar’s film is a completely original take on one of France’s greatest mavericks.

The film is based on Sfar’s best-selling graphic novel and follows the singer, born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, from his precocious childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, to his transition from painter to jazz musician to pop superstar, and through his relationships with the many women in his life including Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta), Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon). Gainsbourg was as famous for his decadent life, fin-de-siecle aesthetic, and cynical wit as for his clever lyrics and musical genius, which went through several reinventions. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Serge Gainsbourg's death. His extraordinary legacy includes the re-interpretation of his songs by numerous musicians including Marianne Faithfull, Beck, Sean Lennon, Kylie Minogue and Arcade Fire.

The film's top cinematography, art direction and costume design perfectly recreate four decades of Parisian life. With a witty, sometimes surrealistic style, and a soundtrack that includes many of the musician’s greatest hits, GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE is a truly original film that does justice to one of the 20th century’s most unique artists.

The film’s running time is 122 minutes; it is not rated. In French; fully subtitled in English.
