Gabriele Di Matteo
“Jackson Pollock. Une vie, éléments et documents”
January 21 until April 19 2009

An analysis through Jackson Pollock; from his conflicting relationship with his mother to the realization of his first works, from the Spring period to his end.

In 1982 the Centre Pompidou in Paris published a catalogue that retraced the works of one of the major artists of the American Abstract Expressionism.
Gabriele Di Matteo submits the images of the “Une vie, éléments et documentes” section, the ones from page 213 to page 310, to a reproduction process. The photos that portray Pollock in the various moments of his life have been translated into paintings and transformed into portraits. Instead, all the documents (letters, typewritten pages, invitations, and so forth), some rewritten by hand, have been rephotographed and enlarged. Extraneous to this process are Pollock’s paintings, and thus the exhibitions views - of halls or expositions spaces that hosted his celebrated drippings or others works – only present blank canvases. Stripping the artist of the image he left behind, Di Matteo puts Painting and all that cannot be compared with any present dynamic on a side, and on the other hand the artist’s life together with theimpossibility it faced.

A voyage in the past of a myth, a grand tour sensible to the research of a more human side and the normalization of a contemporary art history chapter.
A deep insight in the famous catalogue, where the observer enters and takes part, visibly and perceptively speaking, to a span of existence, becoming aware of the sorrows as well as successes, privation and a distant serenity.
