The iconic tutus and doublets of classical ballet evolved from ballets staged as European court entertainments in the 17th century and have been fairly frozen in silhouette since early in the 20th century. But the world of dance now encompasses widely divergent genres and they all need specially designed garments, which enhance the production visually while allowing the dancers to perform with ease and confidence.
