This course looks at the history of jewellery and gemstones within the context of western culture. It traces the earliest developments in the 'fertile crescent' (modern day Iraq) and the jewellery of the ancient Mediterranean cultures of Egypt, the Etruscans, Greece and Rome. It looks at the jewels of the Celts, jewellery from the Mediaeval and Renaissance periods, the Baroque and the revolutionary decades, and the Victorian and Art Deco styles leading to the grand jewellery houses of Cartier and Tiffany, among others. Finally, the course will examine contemporary jewellery world-wide and will look at the work of Australians who exhibit in London, Holland, Germany and Japan.
