Cultural Encounters: Friday Nights at the de Young featuring Jazz at Intersection
Friday, January 18, 2008, 5:00–10:00 pm
The de Young Museum kicks off its third season of Friday Night Programs with an exceptional evening of music and art on January 18. The museum has collaborated with Intersection for the Arts to present a program entitled Jazz at Intersection. Eight musical ensembles will perform original works composed for this special evening. The musicians have been inspired by either a work in the de Young’s permanent collection or a work from a recent special exhibition. Featured ensembles include the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Erik Jekabson’s “West Coast” Quartet + Strings, Howard Wiley and The Angola Project, The Kasey Knudson Group, Angela Wellman’s New Roots, The Ben Goldberg Quintet, The Babatunde Lea Quartet, and Mitch Marcus’ Quintet + 13. For the kick-off event, the entire museum will stay open until 10 pm, and visitors can visit the galleries to view the artworks that have inspired the musicians. Musical performances will begin at 6:30 pm in Wilsey Court and are free of charge. Visitors can also enjoy cocktails in Wilsey Court and dinner in the de Young Café.
Regular gallery admission prices apply on Friday nights. Admission includes access to all festivities including live music and interactive art projects.
