John Santos Quintet performs and Murals Lecture by William Maynez
Friday, August 1, 2008, 5–8:45 pm

Enjoy an evening of live music, art-making, and a special lecture at Friday Nights at the de Young on August 1. The John Santos Quintet, featuring four-time Grammy nominee John Santos, will perform classic Latin jazz from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the United States in the de Young’s Wilsey Court from 6:30–8:30 pm. Friday Nights on August 1 celebrates a new installation in the Art of the Americas galleries of a mural by Miguel Covarrubias (1904–1957) entitled “The Fauna and Flora of the Pacific” from the Pageant of the Pacific mural series (1939). William Maynez, a mural historian at City College of San Francisco will present a lecture entitled Diego Rivera, Covarrubias, and the San Francisco Murals Tradition at 7 pm in the Koret Auditorium. Visitors and families can create animal amulet necklaces inspired by the Covaurrubias mural in the evening’s art making activity in Wilsey Court. The entire museum, including the special exhibition Chihuly at the de Young, is open until 8:45 pm for Friday Nights, and dinner and drinks are available in the de Young Café.
