At the Embassy of France, 4101 Reservoir Road NW

The year is 1945 and a young, blonde nurse fluent in German infiltrates the front lines of Nazi Germany. Posing as a German woman looking for her missing fiancé, she is in fact a member of the French army on a mission to unlock secrets for the Allies. Marthe Cohn, née Marthe Hoffnung Gutglück, is the most unlikely of World War II spies—she is a Jew. Better than fiction, the true story of this decorated heroine is one of boundless courage and war-time secrets, of life as a Jew in France before, during and after the war. In 2000, at the age of 80, Cohn was awarded the Medaille Militaire, one of France’s highest honors; just last year she was awarded the title of Chevalier de la Legion d' Honneur. Her memoir, which was co-written with Wendy Holden and originally published in 2002, was recently reprinted in paperback and published in French. Join us for this unique opportunity to hear her tell her remarkable story in person.

Co-sponsored by the Embassy of France
Presented in cooperation with the J's Jewish Women’s Project

“The book’s greatest value lies in its description of how everyday people, with everyday concerns, can be transformed by cataclysmic events into the most tragic of victims, as well as into great heroes.” —Richard Pearson, Washington Post Book World
