French is fabulous during the month of July at Hillwood. Dating back to her first “Hillwood” estate on New York’s Long Island in the 1920’s, Hillwood founder Marjorie Merriweather Post relished having a view of a formal French parterre from the window of her Louis XVI bedroom and had the experience recreated for her estate in Washington, D.C. This American taste for French style that was popular during the first half of the 20th century lives on today at Hillwood and visitors can immerse themselves in it with the guided audio tour “Kings, Queens and Soup Tureens” as a start to their day at Hillwood, hear talks about the French art, furnishings, and gardens throughout the estate, or simply relax in the café with a glass of champagne.
