PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS

Do you want to dance "freestyle" but aren't quite sure what to do? You're in the right place! Groovy Dancer is the ONLY studio in Seattle teaching this type of dancing!

This is "not your typical dance class." So what is it? Freestyle/nightclub dancing is simply dancing that doesnt fit into one of the more structured styles, like Salsa, Swing or other formalized dances. It's even less structured than hip hop. Freestyle dancing is simply grooving to the music with or without a partner.

This type of dancing is common at

nightclubs,

concerts, blues clubs, and other music venues,

wedding receptions,

prom, homecoming, or other school dance,

cruise ships,

at home, and

various other places.

Learn what looks good (separately for men and women). Learn principles that will allow you to get out on the dance floor and get your groove on! No experience needed.
Though it is largely unstructured, there are some basic principles that will make you a better freestyle dancer, whether you are dancing on your own or with a partner.
Our Freestyle drop-in classes are beginner/intermediate level classes focused on building confidence, making you comfortable on the dance floor, and making dancing fun. Classes are taught at multiple levels simultaneously (both basic movements and more advanced variations are demonstrated). This class is particularly good for absolute beginners. Then keep repeating the classes to learn more and more of the more advanced variations!
In a typical class we

start each class with some basic body isolations and controlled movements,
build up to basic dance movements, and
add layers of complexity on top of that as your skill increases.

We cover

dancing to both fast and slow music,
musicality (matching your movements to the music),
separate styling for men and for women,
mental attitude, and
blending in vs. standing out (hopefully in a good way!)

You wont be learning choreographed dance sequences, but rather fundamental skills and principles that will allow you to dance and move in a way that is natural and comfortable for you, and which is also visually appealing to others.
Overall Goals:
Learn how to:

Isolate body parts and move your body with control and precision
Build isolated movements into general dance moves
Create your own dance moves and style

We'll discuss:

How to get into the mood to dance
How your attitude affects how your movements feel and look
How to ask someone to dance

The Result:

More confidence.
And confidence makes you more comfortable on a dance floor.
And being confident and comfortable lets you have FUN!!!

Everyone who wants to dance has different reasons. Some want to improve their dating life, and some want to overcome being shy. Many just want to get comfortable enough to get out onto the floor and have some fun. Some know how to dance more structured dances but have no idea how to just let it go and dance solo. We tailor each class to the needs of the participants, so each class is a little different. Some students have taken the class dozens of times and learn something new each time! Regardless of your reasons, if you want to learn how to really let yourself go and look good doing it, come join us for in class!

This was a very good introduction to the basics of nightclub dancing even for someone with no prior knowledge! - Anonymous
The class delivered in terms of communicating what movements work well for men. Deb provided good theoretical background to the movements and it was paced well to give me time to do them properly. She was patient and a pleasure to have as a teacher. - Ben from Seattle
