St. Johns College is pleased to welcome Stephen Bown and Jean Barman in conversation on the topic of Pacific Encounters: Vancouver, Native Peoples, and the East.

Stephen R. Bown is an award winning historical non-fiction author. His books include the best selling Scurvy (Macmillan, 2005) and Madness, Betrayal, and the Lash: The Epic Voyage of Captain George Vancouver (Douglas & McIntyre, 2008).

Jean Barman is professor emerita of education at the University of British Columbia and author of British Columbia: Spirit of a People (Harbour, 2008) and the award-winning Stanley Park’s Secret (Harbour, 2007). She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Moderated by Coll Thrush (History, UBC) and Neil Safier (History, UBC).

Coll Thrush is assistant professor of history at the University of British Columbia and author of Native Seattle: Histories from the Crossing-Over Place (Washington, 2007).

Neil Safier is assistant professor of history at the University of British Columbia and author of Measuring the New World: Enlightenment Science and South America (Chicago, 2008).
