Ever wonder how the ideas of non-violence spread from India to the U.S. South during the Civil Rights movement?

Was Martin Luther King Jr. the only leader of the civil rights movement?

Were there any connections between the civil rights and queer rights movements?

The documentary "Brother Outsider" attempts to answer these questions by exploring the life and work of Bayard Rustin. Rustin's decades of activist work in the civil rights and queer rights movements produce massive changes in the attitudes and laws of the United States. However, his early advocacy of queer rights and his radical vision for the civil rights movement have limited his appeal to mainstream commentators.

Join the Socialist Party USA (NYC) for this movie screening and discussion of historical importance of the movement for rights and the need for progressive change in the present.
